An off-duty NYPD highway cop driving on the Long Island Expressway on Monday night struck and killed two people standing outside their disabled BMW, police sources said.
The victims — the 20-year-old driver of the 2004 sports car and a 18-year-old female passenger — had exited their stalled vehicle that came to rest in the westbound HOV lane after a crash near Exit 40 in Old Westbury about 11 p.m., sources said.
The 33-year-old cop, identified by police sources as Edward Rosovich, was traveling westbound in a 2016 GMC Yukon when he slammed into the pair, who flew across the divider and into oncoming traffic from the impact, police said.
The driver was declared dead on scene, while his passenger later died at the hospital. Two other passengers in the BMW, an 18-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man, were also hospitalized.
Rosovich remained on scene and suffered minor injuries in the smashup.
No criminality is suspected, but the Nassau County DA’s office is looking into whether Rosovich was speeding at the time of the accident, according to sources.
