The best things in life really are worth waiting for.
At long last, the grand five-bedroom triplex penthouse at 520 W. 28th St. — a luxury 39-unit development designed by late starchitect Zaha Hadid — has come to market for a cool $50 million, according to a release from the project developer, the Related Companies.
Hadid, who received the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 2004, died in March of a heart attack at the age of 65 in a Miami hospital.
The asking price for this 6,853-square-foot spread, which is one of three penthouses in the building, has long been known — but now, a deep-pocketed buyer in search of a one-of-a-kind home can finally snatch it up.
But surprisingly — considering the rarity of this unit — the $50 million sale of this residence would not beat the downtown record, which was set in 2014 by the $50.9 million purchase of the Walker Tower penthouse.
At 520 W. 28th St., this penthouse’s lower level has a corner master suite with a private balcony, two windowed dressing rooms and two master bathrooms. This level also houses three other bedrooms and a wet bar.
Elsewhere in the condo, there’s a 1,250-square-foot-plus corner great room with a fireplace and another balcony. The eat-in chef’s kitchen, which Hadid designed with Italian brand Boffi, boasts Gaggenau appliances and a marble-clad island. Both an elevator and a Hadid-designed staircase connect all floors. Construction of the building is under way.
There’s plenty of room inside the penthouse, but there’s actually more outdoors. Impossible to ignore is the penthouse’s sprawling, 2,218-square-foot terrace, which has an outdoor kitchen with a grill, sink and fridge.
The buyer will also have access to the building’s amenities, which include a full-time concierge, private IMAX theater, 75-foot pool, gym and robotic parking. Perhaps most valuable of all, the penthouse is known as one of the very few designed by Hadid in the entire American hemisphere.
