Man convicted of second-degree murder in dice game gone bad

Lawrence Harris

A young Brooklyn man was convicted of murder and assault on Wednesday for fatally shooting one person and wounding two others during a dice game in 2012.

“This case is another reminder of the mayhem caused by senseless gun violence,” explained District Attorney Ken Thompson, describing how 24-year-old Lawrence Harris brazenly opened fire in the middle of a Brownsville street, blasting off ten rounds as bystanders ran for their lives.

During the mayhem, bullets struck and killed 20-year-old Trendon Franklin, who was playing dice on the corner of Sutter Avenue and Union Street.

Another victim was also grazed in the chest and finger, while a third person was shot in the back.

Harris was arrested in April 2013 and convicted in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Wednesday of second-degree murder, first-degree attempted assault, reckless endangerment and other related counts. He faces up to 47 years to life in prison.

“[Harris] will now spend a good part of his life behind bars because of the terrible choice that he made,” Thompson said.

Harris is scheduled to be sentenced on June 14.
