New Yorkers will face stiffer penalties for assaulting subway station agents and cleaners.
Gov. Cuomo on Friday signed legislation allowing prosecutors to seek punishment of up to seven years in prison for such crimes.
The law makes the punishment the same as the one meted out to anyone who attacks subway-train operators and bus drivers.
Some 117 transit workers were assaulted between June 2015 and May of this year, according to transit-union officials.
“Subway cleaners have been the victims of unprovoked, unwarranted and unacceptable attacks,’’ said Transport Workers Union Local 100 boss John Samuelsen.
