I started playing tennis when I was 5 years old. Back then, I was a tiny tomboy who loved the sport but refused to wear the signature pleated skirts. Fast-forward to my senior year of high school, where I was the captain of a very talented team. I wanted us to look as good as we played, so I lobbied for a uniform overhaul that called for white, collared tops with matching pleated skirts, and luckily, my coach agreed.
Although I haven’t worn a preppy collar since, a pleated skirt is still a part of my regular wardrobe rotation. It feels crisp, fresh and cool, much like playing the sport itself. Check out my three favorite ways to translate tennis’ chicest trends into an ace wardrobe.
The little white dress
Nothing is more iconic than tennis’ bright whites, but what I love about this LWD is its texture and graphic detail. The ruffles are super on-trend, and paired with the classic Tretorn sneaker, I’m feeling nothing but love for this sweet look.
The mesh tennis dress
I styled this fuzzy sweater (which literally reminds me of a tennis ball) over a mesh tennis dress to give this look a fashion-meets-function vibe. The striped socks-and-heels combo has become one of my favorite styling tricks, and I love the playfulness it adds to this #winning look.
The pleated skirt
Not only is the pleated skirt classic tennis gear, it’s one of my favorite wardrobe go-tos in real life, because you can wear it with everything: slouchy sweaters, beat-up denim jackets, high-tops, block heels — the possibilities are endless. I opted to pair this one with a jersey knit for a streamlined look that reads sporty chic. And the sneakers? The perfect touch for your inner style star.
