The Giants have found a replacement for kicker Josh Brown — for at least one game.
The team signed kicker Randy Bullock — formerly of the Texans and Jets — to a one-year deal Monday and waived 23-year-old Tom Obarski, who has never appeared in a regular-season game and missed a 27-yard field-goal attempt against the Bills in Saturday’s 21-0 preseason loss.
Because Bullock, 26, is a vested veteran with four accrued years of NFL service — he missed his entire rookie season because of injury — his salary for the season would be guaranteed and his pay would count against the team’s salary cap if he is on the Giants roster for Week 1, according to a source.
Brown, 37, is serving a one-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy following a domestic violence charge that was dropped last year. He has been with the Giants since 2013.
A fifth-round pick of out Texas A&M in 2012, Bullock played for the Texans until being released last September. He spent the remainder of the season with the Jets, replacing the injured Nick Folk.
In eight games with the Jets, Bullock made 14-of-17 field goal attempts and was 19-of-20 on extra points.
For his career, he has hit 75-of-93 (80.6 percent) field-goal attempts.
Victor Cruz was able to jog and do some conditioning work during Monday’s light practice. The wide receiver is scheduled to be a full-participant in Tuesday’s practice. Out since Aug. 9 with tightness in his groin, Cruz is hoping to appear against the Jets this weekend. He last played in a game on Oct. 12, 2014.
Right guard Justin Pugh also returned to practice Monday after missing Saturday’s game in Buffalo. He said he felt good afterwards and plans to play against the Jets, but he still needed to monitor how he feels after back-to-back days of work.
“There was no structural damage in my shoulder, so it was just making sure I was just getting the strength back in and getting the swelling out of my shoulder,” Pugh said. “Making sure my shoulder is healthy for the season is obviously of utmost importance. I think it’s putting together days, seeing how my shoulder feels [Tuesday] and make sure I’m not taking steps back because obviously Sept. 11 is a day we’re looking forward to and I have to make sure I’m healthy and 100 percent to go and I don’t hurt this team by trying to come back too early.”
Tight end Matt LaCosse is day-to-day with a knee injury.
