With their lineup looking a little lean, the Yankees have ordered baseball’s Country Breakfast.
Billy “Country Breakfast” Butler, recently released by the Athletics following a terrible season and controversial incident, has signed with the Yankees, an industry source confirmed.
The righty-swinging Butler, 30, slashed .276/.331/.403 in 85 games this season, hitting just four home runs in 221 at-bats. The A’s dismissed him with more than a year to go on the three-year, $30-million contract he signed with them in November 2014.
Butler reportedly got into a clubhouse physical altercation with his A’s teammate Danny Valencia in August.
With rookie Aaron Judge out for the rest of the regular season with a right oblique strain, the Yankees could use some right-handed pop, especially because they will face three lefty starters the next four days in Boston and, as FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal pointed out, could face as many as seven during their 11-game road trip against Boston, Tampa Bay and Toronto. Butler holds a career .299/.381/.491 slash line against southpaws, although he went just .262/.316/.369 against them this season.
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports first reported the signing.
