The Giants’ Josh Brown problem has metastasized into such an unsavory mess it prompted the mother of their rookie cornerback to blast the Big Blue brass — and divulge that she, too, is a survivor of domestic abuse.
Annie Apple, the outspoken mother of Eli Apple, had some harsh words for John Mara after his comments on the latest disturbing revelations about their kicker’s domestic violence history.
“He admitted to us that he’s abused his wife in the past,” Mara — seemingly making the problem worse — told WFAN on Thursday. “And I think what’s a little unclear is the extent of that.”
Mara’s suggestion there are varying degrees of domestic violence was particularly upsetting to the 42-year-old mother of four.
“The are no levels of domestic violence. It’s all bad. And it’s all wrong. It’s a crime,” an emotional Apple told The Post from London. “I don’t tweet for the NFL, I don’t tweet for the Giants. I tweet what’s in my heart. Whether the NFL knew, I don’t know, but domestic violence is not a just an NFL issues, it’s a society issue. And we have to attack the mentality of deliberate ignorance.”
Her tweets drew both applause and criticism and sent a jolt through the football world.
While she didn’t offer any details on her own ordeal, she called domestic violence a “terror” and said Brown’s disturbingly detailed account of his criminal behavior dredged up her own painful memories.
“When you read about another woman’s nightmare; it makes yours real again,” she wrote.
Apple — who rose to prominence during the NFL draft, when numerous outlets crowned her the greatest sports mom because of her candor and humor — said the last 24 hours have been difficult.
“Nobody wants to be the poster girl for domestic violence, but I would have felt like a hypocrite to myself,” she said. “I needed to speak out and let all the Molly Browns and Annie Apples, the other victims, know that they are not alone.”
She also refused to back down from her critics.
