The horrifying tale told by a California super-mom who said she was abducted and held captive for three weeks appears to be true, authorities said.
“We currently have no reason to disbelieve Sherri Papini’s story,” Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said on Sunday, according to ABC News. “She was assaulted and had injuries which she was treated for.”
Papini was found chained and badly beaten on the side of a highway on Thanksgiving morning — about 150 miles from her home in Redding, Calif.
The 34-year-old married mom of two vanished Nov. 2 after leaving her home to go on a jog.
Investigators are looking into Papini’s past, which includes a previous marriage, and her online activity, the sheriff said.
About 20 search warrants have been filed in order to obtain data from surveillance footage and cellphone towers, ABC News reported.
Authorities are looking for two armed Hispanic women driving a dark SUV in connection with the abduction.
