Convicted sex offenders are packaging sex toys in the slammer, a work assignment blasted as “disrespectful to victims” by French prison unions.
The officials bristled when they found out that four of the five deviants at a prison in in Grasse, a small town on the French Riviera, pass their time boxing dildos for private company Easy Love.
“It’s disrespectful to the victims,” said Hervé Segaud, spokesman for the FO-Pénitentiaire union, The Local reported. “Can you imagine how the victims would feel if they learned what these prisoners are doing?”
He said he was aware that French prisons needed to “get with the times” by having inmates work, but that this particular case was “disturbing”.
Prison honchos need to think long and hard when assigning tasks to prisoners, he noted, and must to consider which prisoners are suitable for which jobs.
Segaud added: “And I’m not sure that this is good for the rehabilitation of these kind of people with these kinds of sicknesses.”
Inmates in France are not forced to work, but can take jobs–usually menial tasks — with private companies. They are paid about half of the country’s national minimum wage, which comes out to be just over $5 an hour.
