The NFL isn’t ready to euthanize its Thursday night experiment just yet.
Despite sagging ratings and consistently shoddy play on a short week, the league refuted a ProFootballTalk report that said it was looking into throwing in the towel on Thursday Night Football. The league released a statement Monday, saying it is “fully committed … and any reports to the contrary are unfounded.”
The NFL has a contract with NBC and CBS through 2017, but could opt to eliminate or reduce the number of Thursday night games, unpopular with players and fans, shown after that season.
The NFL’s Thursday night plan debuted Nov. 23, 2006.
