The first law Congress will work on under President Trump is the repeal of ObamaCare, President Obama’s signature legislation, according to the top Republican on Capitol Hill.
“Well, the first bill we’re going to be working on is our ObamaCare legislation,” Speaker of the House Paul Ryan told CBS’ “60 Minutes.”
Ryan suggested the bill won’t just repeal the law known as the Affordable Care Act, but will also replace it.
“We want to make sure that we have a good transition period, so that people can get better coverage at a better price,” Ryan said, suggesting that only getting rid of the law would result in tens of millions of Americans losing health-care coverage.
But the Republican leader wouldn’t commit on a timeline — or an exact replacement.
“Yeah, I don’t know the answer to that right now. What we know is we have to make good on this promise. We have to bring relief as fast as possible to people who are struggling under ObamaCare,” Ryan said in the interview.
Asked what would replace it, he only said, “patient-centered health care that gets everybody access to affordable health-care coverage. So they can buy what they want to buy.”
ObamaCare became law in March 2010 and was slowly implemented in the years following.
