The school-bus driver who caused a horrific Baltimore crash that killed six people last month was speeding, had a history of seizures and had been involved in at least a dozen previous smashups, according to a federal report released Wednesday.
The driver, Glenn Chappell, 67, was among those killed in the Nov. 1 crash, which occurred when his yellow school bus, which was empty, rear-ended a car, hit the entrance to a cemetery, veered onto oncoming traffic and smashed into a commuter bus carrying a driver and 13 students, authorities said. Ten other people were injured.
Investigators found that Chappell had a history of hypertension, diabetes and seizures, according to the report by the National Transportation Safety Board.
Paramedics were called just a week before the fatal crash because he had a seizure while driving a bus, the agency said.
Chappell also had been involved in at least 12 prior crashes in the past five years, the report said.
The bus he crashed into last month was a Maryland Transit Administration vehicle.
