This year’s hottest holiday gift? $85 pet rock sells out

Are you in the market for a luxury pet rock this holiday season? Tough luck.

Nordstrom was offering an $85 “hand-made” stone, before it sold out on Wednesday on its online store. More frugal shoppers also wiped out the stock of the smaller, $65 option.

“A paperweight? A conversation piece? A work of art? It’s up to you, but this smooth Los Angeles-area stone — wrapped in rich, vegetable-tanned American leather secured by sturdy contrast whipstitching — is sure to draw attention wherever it rests,” the website stated.

The pricey stone became a hot item after its over-the-top reviews went viral.

“Choose this over food,” wrote one reviewer. “As a single mother, it is often difficult to put food on the table for my 5 children. However, when I saw this piece of rock, I couldn’t help it but to purchase this item. Yes, no one in my family will eat this month, however I have a piece of rock… I can’t believe the rock is made by hand too! I was always told rocks were made through thousands of years erosion, guess I was wrong.”

There is even a @NordstromRock parody account on Twitter in its honor.

“So you gave her a BOLD gift last Christmas?” the account tweeted. “Well the NordstromRock is a little boulder.”

Although the rock is advertised as “hand-made,” a Nordstrom spokesperson admitted that might not be the case.

“Only Mother Earth can take credit for rocks,” a Nordstrom spokesperson told BuzzFeed News.
