Gold thief suspected in several other heists, cops say
The man who made off with a bucket of gold flakes from the back of an armored truck in Midtown in September is believed to be connected to seven other thefts in Manhattan from May to August of this year, cops said.
Julio Nivelo, 53, is believed to have swiped a box of Jimmy Choo shoes from a truck on Madison Avenue near East 62nd Street on May 9. He dropped the box when the truck driver yelled at him, police said.
Two weeks later, cops say he may have stolen jewelry from a courier truck on Madison Avenue near East 61st Street.
And on July 25, cops believe he stole camera equipment from a car on West 66th Street near Central Park West.
He may also be connected to a theft of clothing and eyewear from a Fed Ex truck on East 78th Street and Madison Avenue back on Aug. 10, police said.
In three other incidents–two in May and one in July–cops believe Nivelo swiped unknown items from trucks on the Upper East Side.
On Wednesday, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce called Nivelo “a career criminal who seems to feed off of trucks and vans in the Midtown area.”
“We’ve tracked him all around the country; to Florida and now out to California,” Boyce added. “So we are working with authorities there to bring him in.”
