A Senegalese immigrant charged in the sex-fueled strangulation murder of an American woman in Italy will spend the next three decades behind bars, a court has ruled.
Cheik Tidiane Diaw, who choked the life out of Ashley Olsen, a 35-year-old transplant from Florida, was slapped with the 30-year prison term by a Florence judge on Thursday.
Diaw also “slammed her head against something” in her Florence apartment during the January 9 attack, caving in her skull, prosecutors have said.
Surveillance cameras posted on the street captured Olsen walking with Diaw into the building where she lived.
Police also linked Diaw to the slaying after getting a DNA match off of a cigarette butt and a condom that were left inside Olsen’s apartment.
Diaw denied killing Olsen to investigators, but admitted that he had a confrontation with her.
Prosecutors believe the two had first met at a shady, members-only drug den called Montecarla and went back to her pad to have sex that night.
The case received international attention and drew parallels to the Amanda Knox case.
