Old people are really into using Facebook
Geezers are going geek — and they’re strengthening Facebook’s dominance as America’s favorite social-media platform.
A recent study by Pew Research Center reveals that a majority of Americans now get their news from social media.
The study further shows that Facebook continues to be the country’s most popular platform, engaging nearly eight in 10 of America’s online users.
That’s more than double the share commanded by Twitter (24 percent), Instagram (32 percent), Pinterest (31 percent) or LinkedIn (29 percent).
Facebook’s share is also 7 percentage points greater than it was in the same survey a year ago — a gain Pew attributes to older adults finally taking to social media.
“Some 62 percent of online adults ages 65 and older now use Facebook, a 14-point increase from the 48 percent who reported doing so in 2015,” Pew reports.
The study also suggests Facebook is habit-forming — with 76 percent of its American users admitting to visiting the site daily. That’s up from 70 percent a year ago.
Facebook’s gains boosted its user base to 68 percent of the total US population.
