Stonehenge! Where the demons dwell … and Druids don’t pay for parking.
A high ranking member of the Druid faith was authorized to sue Britain’s national historical society Monday after the Pagan priest was ticketed for disregarding a $6 parking fee after leaving his car in the Stonehenge lot for a prayer ceremony.
King Arthur Pendragon was fined around $18 by the English Heritage after he refused to “pay to pray” when he parked at the Neolithic monument during the 2016 Summer Solstice, according to the BBC.
Pendragon — who was born John Timothy Rothwell but later took the name of the legendary Excalibur swinger — says that the fine “unfairly targets his religion.” He has been allowed to go forward with the suit in a Salisbury small claims court, the BBC reported.
Pagans celebrate four annual dawn ceremonies at the prehistoric site, which is also the subject of the Spinal Tap 1984 hit song of the same name.
Pendragon was joined by other Druid, Heathen and Wiccan supporters to protest outside the court, who felt the parking fee was “exclusionary” for the more than 12,000 people who take part in the celebration.
A full day of hearings will be set, with Pendragon requesting they not conflict with the spring or summer aolstice.
“This was a procedural hearing establishing the next steps and we look forward to presenting our full case at a later date,” a spokeswoman with the English Heritage told the BBC.
