The NYPD captain who was slammed for saying the increase in date rapes in his Brooklyn precinct was “not a trend that we’re too worried about” apologized for his comments Monday.
Capt. Peter Rose, commanding officer of the 94th Precinct in Greenpoint, took to Twitter to apologize for making statements last week that appeared to minimize rape cases where the victim and attacker are known to each other.
“I would like to take this opportunity to offer my apology for comments that I made,” Rose tweeted.
“I deeply regret the statement I made last week about rape. I failed to communicate accurately how I respond to reports of rape, and the actions the department as a whole takes. My comments were not meant to minimize the seriousness of sexual assault.
“Every rape, whether it is perpetrated by a stranger or someone known to them is fully investigated,” he added. “We make no distinction in our response. My comments suggested otherwise and for that I apologize.”
Last week Rose scoffed when asked about a 62 percent increase in sex attacks in his jurisdiction over the last year — dismissing the majority as date rapes.
“Some of them were Tinder, some of them were hookup sites, some of them were actually coworker — it’s not a trend that we’re too worried about because out of 13 [sex attacks], only two were true stranger rapes,” he told DNAinfo.
“If there’s a true stranger rape — a random guy picks up a stranger off the street — those are the troubling ones,” he said. “That [attacker] has, like, no moral standards.”
Rose dug himself into an even deeper hole when he elaborated at a monthly community council meeting Wednesday night.
“They’re not total abomination rapes where strangers are being dragged off the street,” he said of the majority of the incidents responsible for the crime hike.
