A furious feminist group is planning to protest outside a Brooklyn police precinct Tuesday after the commanding officer said date rapes are “not a trend that we’re too worried about” compared to stranger rapes.
Members of the National Organization for Women said Monday that they will target the 94th Precinct in Greenpoint to condemn the comments made last week by the precinct’s commanding officer, Capt. Peter Rose.
Rose had scoffed that the majority of the incidents behind the 62 percent increase in sex attacks in his jurisdiction over the past year were date rapes.
“Some of them were Tinder, some of them were hookup sites, some of them were actually coworker — it’s not a trend that we’re too worried about because out of 13 [sex attacks], only two were true stranger rapes,” he told DNAinfo.
“If there’s a true stranger rape — a random guy picks up a stranger off the street — those are the troubling ones,” he said. “That [attacker] has, like no moral standards.”
Rose dug himself into an even deeper hole when he elaborated further at a monthly community council meeting Wednesday night.
“They’re not total abomination rapes where strangers are being dragged off the street,” he said of the uptick.
The comments drew the ire of City Hall and other elected officials.
“The worst part is that this mentality is widespread in our criminal justice system,” said Jane Manning, a NOW official and protest organizer, on Monday.
“This captain said something out loud that far too many law enforcement officials believe and put into practice,” she said.
“This means worse treatment for victims who report sex crimes to the police, less effort and fewer resources devoted to investigating sex crimes, and higher chances that sexual predators will get away with their crimes so that they can attack again.”
