Paul Massey says campaign set new fundraising record

Paul MasseyHandout

Republican mayoral candidate Paul Massey announced on Friday that his campaign had raised more than $1.6 million in the latest six-month filing period — which officials in his campaign labeled a record for a January filing.

They said the haul doesn’t include personal funds that Massey has donated to his campaign, but that it includes “a substantial share” of donations from Democrats and independents.

“My campaign is building a winning coalition of New Yorkers who believe our city desperately needs an independent-minded problem solver in City Hall,” Massey, a real estate mogul, said in a statement.

“I’m grateful for the significant support I have received and am energized for the 10 months ahead.”

Massey has said he doesn’t plan to take public matching funds in the 2017 race.

The official filing totals — including for Mayor de Blasio and Comptroller Scott Stringer — won’t be released by the Campaign Finance Board until early next week.

But the Massey campaign said the highest previous intake for a January filing period was mayoral candidate Alan Hevesi’s $1.3 million haul in 2001.

De Blasio took in $753,593 in the January 2013 filing period ahead of his come-from-behind election win, according to Campaign Finance Board records.

CFB officials couldn’t immediately confirm the campaign’s claim of record fundraising for a January filing period.

For billionaire Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who self financed his campaigns, didn’t collect donations from others.

De Blasio campaign spokesman Dan Levitan didn’t comment on the amount raised by Massey, but touted the mayor’s record in office.

“Under Mayor de Blasio, crime just hit another all-time low, jobs are at record highs, the city is building and preserving affordable housing at a record pace, while graduation rates and test scores continue to improve,” he said. “We are happy to match that record against anyone.”
