‘La La Land’ dominates Oscar nominations

“La La Land” dominated the Oscar nominations Tuesday, scoring 14 nods — including the Motion Picture Academy’s top award, Best Picture.

The musical, with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, tied “Titanic’s” record for the most nominations in one year. The James Cameron epic went on to win Best Picture in 1998.

“La La Land” joined “Arrival,” “Fences,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hell or High Water,” “Hidden Figures,” “Lion,” “Manchester by the Sea” and “Moonlight” as nominees for the Oscars’ biggest prize.

Honors for Best Actor went to Gosling, Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”), Andrew Garfield (“Hacksaw Ridge”), Viggo Mortensen (“Captain Fantastic”) and Denzel Washington (“Fences”).

“I was hoping our movie would get lucky and I’m really proud to be able to represent ‘Captain Fantastic,’ ” Mortensen told ABC News following his nomination. “It was the little movie that could. It was one of the finest I’ve ever been part of … for a small movie like ours, it means the world to us.”

For Best Actress, the nominees were Stone, Isabelle Huppert (“Elle”), Ruth Negga (“Loving”), Natalie Portman (“Jackie”) and Meryl Streep (“Florence Foster Jenkins”).

It was Streep’s 20th nomination, taking her another step ahead of Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson, who are next on the all-time list with 12 nods.

Streep was famously called “overrated” by Donald Trump after the actress gave a stinging indictment of the then-incoming president at the Golden Globes earlier this month.

Nominations for Best Director went to Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”), Mel Gibson (“Hacksaw Ridge”), Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”), Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”) and Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”).

The top actors in a supporting role were Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”), Jeff Bridges (“Hell or High Water”), Lucas Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”), Dev Patel (“Lion”) and Michael Shannon (“Nocturnal Animals”).

“Obviously it’s kind of a dark movie, very emotional, but it seems to be striking a chord with some people,” Shannon told ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“It’s so funny. I’m at a hotel right now waiting for my room so I’m literally standing out on the sidewalk pacing around. It’s a very unglamorous situation. I haven’t had a chance to talk to any of my family yet, being so far away.”

Supporting actress nods went to Viola Davis (“Fences”), Naomie Harris (“Moonlight”), Nicole Kidman (“Lion”), Octavia Spencer (“Hidden Figures”) and Michelle Williams (“Manchester by the Sea”).

The 89th Academy Awards are scheduled for Feb. 26 with host Jimmy Kimmel on ABC at 8:30 p.m.

This year’s Oscars include a diverse set of nominees — in stark contrast to recent honor rolls that sparked the #OscarsSoWhite protest.

Black performers Washington, Negga, Davis, Harris and Spencer and Indian-British Patel all gained nods after two consecutive Oscar seasons with no actors or actresses of color gaining top honors.

“I couldn’t follow it live, I was too nervous,” Harris told “GMA,” explaining that her brother called to deliver the big news. “He was screaming, and then I was screaming.”

Critically acclaimed performances that were surprisingly left off Oscar’s lists on Tuesday included Amy Adams for her work in “Arrival”; Tom Hanks, who led the cast of “Sully”; Taraji P. Henson in “Hidden Figures,” and Annette Bening in “20th Century Women.”

Pharrell’s tune “I See A Victory” from “Hidden Figures” also failed to be recognized Tuesday.

“Finding Dori” was a critical hit and box office smash but fell short of the list for best animated films.

On the Oscars website, Adams, Hanks and Bening were briefly listed — incorrectly — as nominees, while Negga’s name was missing. The mistakes were quickly corrected.

Among the bigger surprises Tuesday was Gibson’s directing nod. Gibson’s “Braveheart” won Oscars for best picture and directing way back in 1996 — but he’s been on the fringes of Hollywood since his 2006 DUI arrest and anti-Semitic tirade.

Oscars fans might have been shocked hearing the words “Suicide Squad” on Tuesday. The comic-book flop scored a nomination for best makeup and hairstyling.
