Signs reading “The Eugene” have sprung up at Brookfield’s 844-unit rental apartment tower nearing completion at the developer’s Manhattan West complex. The 62-story tower will boast such amenities as a huge La Palestra fitness center.
But who, some residents may ask, is Eugene?
None other than John Eugene Zuccotti, the former Brookfield chairman and beloved New York real estate legend who passed away in November 2015 at age 78.
Sadly, Zuccotti didn’t live to see the seven-acre, six-building Manhattan West now rising. Brookfield spent decades getting it off the ground under his leadership.
At least tenants, employees of Skadden Arps and the NHL at the first office tower (1 Manhattan West), and users of a hotel and shopping complex will have a daily reminder of the man behind the address.
