Former President George H.W. Bush was released from a Texas hospital on Monday, having overcome his bout with pneumonia, officials said.
“He is thankful for the many prayers and kind messages he received during his stay, as well as the world-class care that both his doctors and nurses provided,” Bush family spokesman Jim McGrath said.
The libraries of George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, the 41st and 43rd presidents, both tweeted two-word reactions to the elder chief executive’s release: “Great news!”
House Speaker Paul Ryan called George H.W. Bush a “national treasure” on Monday and tweeted: “I’m relieved to know he has been discharged from the hospital and is feeling better.”
The 92-year-old former president was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Jan. 14 with breathing difficulties.
He was moved to intensive care on Jan. 18 and had a breathing tube inserted. That tube was later removed and he was moved out of ICU on Jan. 23.
Wife Barbara Bush, 91, was also hospitalized, alongside her husband, and diagnosed with bronchitis. She was admitted days after her husband fell ill and was discharged on Jan. 23.
George H.W. and Barbara Bush — who have been married for 72 years — watched President Trump’s inaugural together at Houston Methodist a week ago Friday.
Before he was hospitalized, Bush sent a hilarious letter to Trump, gracefully declining his inaugural invite.
“My doctor says if I sit outside in January, it likely will put me six feet under. Same for Barbara. So I guess we’re stuck in Texas,” Bush wrote.
