This Fashion Week, designers and editors alike are wearing their passion on their very stylish sleeves.
Vogue editor Anna Wintour was an early adopter of the trend, wearing a “Fashion Stands With Planned Parenthood” while front row at Brock Collection’s show on Thursday.
On Friday morning, Tanya Taylor’s guests received round pink magnets bearing the same message at her presentation, while Jonathan Simkhai took his finale bow on Saturday night wearing a simple white t-shirt that read “Feminist AF” in bold black lettering (front-row guests each received one in their seats, but the tee is available now on jonathansimkhai.com for $95, with all proceeds being donated to Planned Parenthood).
On Sunday morning at Public School, models walked the runway donning red caps that declared “Make America New York.” Immediately afterward, Gypsy Sport opened its show with a heartfelt speech, over a speaker backstage, from its young designer Rio Uribe. Uribe dedicated his show to the “people who live on the street and who just don’t have much fashion in their life or any of the luxuries we take for granted.”
And Sunday night at Prabal Gurung, which showcased one of the most celeb-heavy front rows all week (Sarah Jessica Parker, Priyanka Chopra and Huma Abedin, to name a few), the Nelapese designer closed his runway show with each model — cast in all shapes, colors and sizes — walking the runway in a custom slogan T-shirt emblazoned with phrases such as “The Future Is Female, “Stay Woke” and “This Is What A Feminist Looks Like.” The soundtrack pointedly featured a woman’s voice covering John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
“It was so powerful and yes, feminists look like that,” “Quantico” star Priyanka Chopra told The Post. “It was awesome.”
In a sea of powerful politically charged moments seen on this week’s runways, Gurung’s show poetically drove home the point and was met with a standing ovation, leaving some in the star-studded audience with tears in their eyes.
