The Lamborghini Aventador, which looks like it could be from Mars, is the subject of a total recall.
All of the roughly 5,900 of the $400,000-plus supercars manufactured from 2011 to 2016 need to be repaired due to a fire risk caused by a flaw in their evaporative emissions control system, including the 1,453 sold in the United States.
According to paperwork filed with NHTSA, liquid fuel can get into the system under certain circumstances and cause untreated vapors to come into contact with hot gasses, leading to ignition.
The number of cars that experienced this type of event was not revealed.
Cars with overfilled tanks that have their engines revved when stationary are at particular risk, and fitting an aftermarket exhaust system just makes matters worse. A new purge valve will be installed to remedy the issue.
Among the affected cars are the 12 Aventador-based Venenos that Lamborghini built in 2013 and 2014 to celebrate its 50th anniversary and sold for over $4 million each.
