The House Intelligence Committee will continue investigating Russian meddling in the US election “with or without” help from Democrats, its chairman said Wednesday.
Rep. Devin Nunes’ comments come after a slew of Democrats called on the chair to recuse himself from the investigation because he met with a secret source on White House grounds.
Nunes has pledged not to reveal his source to the rest of the committee and has rebuffed calls to step aside from the investigation.
On Wednesday, he accused some of his committee members of not being “serious” about the ongoing probe.
“We’re beginning to figure out who’s actually serious about the investigation because it appears like the Democrats aren’t really serious about this investigation,” Nunes told reporters.
“So, at the end of the day here, we’re going to get to the truth, we’re going to find out who’s actually doing a real investigation,” he added.
One House Republican, Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC), joined the Democratic chorus — including the top Democrat on the intel committee, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), and the top Democrat in the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in calling for Nunes to recuse himself.
“I mean, we always want to keep the committee bipartisan. But at the end of the day, we’re going to do an investigation with or without them, and if they want to participate that’s fine, but the facts of the matter are pretty clear,” Nunes said Wednesday.
