The world’s best restaurant is right in our backyard

Eleven Madison Park in Manhattan is the best restaurant in the world — the first time the US has clinched the top honor since 2004.

The contemporary American eatery, located across from Madison Square Park, beat out Osteria Francescana in Italy, which came in second in the annual contest. Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca was third.

Eleven Madison Park is headed by Swiss-born chef Daniel Humm, who won his first Michelin star at age 24 and took the helm of the restaurant in 2006.

He and co-owner Will Guidara offer a seasonal tasting menu with eight to 10 courses, including sea urchin custard with baby squid and bay scallops and apple, according to Bloomberg.

But on April 11, they’ll debut an 11-course prix fixe menu for $295 per person. Tips are included, but not taxes or beverages. That meal will last about three hours, the restaurant’s website says.

Winners of the world’s 50 best restaurants were announced at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne, Australia. They’re decided by a panel of more than 1,000 chefs, food writers and experts across 26 regions.

Three other New York restaurants made it into the top 50: At No. 11 was Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, Le Bernardin in the Theater District was at 17 and Cosme in the Flatiron ranked 40.

The last American restaurant to earn the No. 1 spot was chef Thomas Keller’s French Laundry in Yountville, Calif., which won in 2003 and 2004.
