Residents of the posh Sutton Place neighborhood are fighting to block the proposed construction of a towering building they complain will dwarf its neighbors.
Residents have banded together to propose their own rezoning plan, limiting future buildings to 260 feet.
“New Yorkers walk away from overdevelopment, thinking there is nothing they can do. We’re done with that,” said City Councilman Ben Kallos.
But developer Jon Kalikow says this is about “people who don’t want their views blocked.”
The proposed building would dwarf the 460-foot-tall Sovereign, whose residents include Donald Trump Jr.
One woman “even complained that ‘several Pablo Picasso works that adorn her walls’ would be deprived of optimal lighting” when the proposed 700-plus-foot-tall building, known as Sutton 58, is completed, a spokesperson for developer Gamma said.
