Suspect in Google exec’s murder held on $10M bail

A Massachusetts judge set $10 million bail Tuesday for the man accused of murdering a New York-based Google executive.

Angelo Colon-Ortiz is, for now, only booked for aggravated assault, assault and battery, and assault with intent to rape — although prosecutors said they plan to hit him with a murder charge for the Aug. 7 slaying of Vanessa Marcotte, 27.

The DA asked for the high bond and Leominster District Court Judge Mark Noonan ordered Colon-Ortiz, 31, held for $10 million.

Colon-Ortiz pleaded not guilty to all charges. Defense lawyer Edward Ryan Jr. said he reserves the right to request a lower bail.

“He has no record,” Ryan told the Boston Herald before his client was arraigned. “The case raises a number of significant legal issues. And declarations of guilt at a press conference does not make someone guilty.”

Marcotte was visiting family in Princeton, Mass., about 40 miles west of Boston, when she went out for an afternoon jog and never returned. Her body was found in nearby woods later that night.

Cops arrested Colon-Ortiz in Worcester late Friday after he allowed investigators to take a DNA sample from inside his cheek, prosecutors said. The DNA allegedly matched material found on Marcotte’s hands.
