Teen who threw newborn in the trash could regain custody

A Washington teen mom convicted of throwing her newborn son in a dumpster could regain custody of the boy.

Samantha Houston, 19, was sentenced Monday to six months in prison for felony abandonment. The teen mom pleaded guilty to leaving her son to die in a trash compactor in March 2016 after giving birth in a shower in Everett, Washington.

Prosecutors said that the newborn was moments from being crushed in the trash compactor when a passerby heard his cries, according to The Everett Herald.

“I wish I could take back what happened,” Houston said at the hearing. “What happened to him must be the worst possible thing that could have happened to a newborn. I wish I could take it back.”

Superior Court Judge Richard Okren said that Houston, who was granted weekly supervised visits with her son, is “on track” to regain custody if she continues to follow court instructions, news station KIRO reported.

“I just want to be able to make sure that little boy knows that I will fight for him as much as I can,” Houston said through sobs.
