Coldplay could be set to perform at Rory McIlroy’s star-studded wedding this weekend in Ireland.
Chris Martin and the band are being tipped to perform at the glitzy bash at medieval Ashford Castle. McIlroy, 27, is set to tie the knot with his number one birdie Erica Stoll this weekend, although details are being kept strictly under wraps.
But sources close to the couple say the “Yellow” hit-makers are heavily rumored to be performing for the McIlroys. And One Direction star Niall Horan, who is close pals with McIlroy, is sure to be on the guest list.
An insider explained: “They are trying to keep the big day as private as they can, even with all the A-listers invited. The rumor is that Coldplay are performing as they are one of Rory’s favorite bands. Rory has said he’ll spare no expense on the big day, and he loves the band so we’ll see.”
McIlroy has admitted to listening to Coldplay when he’s practicing.
He previously said: “Listening to music helps throttle back my tempo. I’m not talking about upbeat hip-hop or some Celtic metal band. I need something a little more mellow when I hit balls — acoustic stuff like Coldplay’s older music, Ed Sheeran, Bon Iver.”
McIlroy said recently: “It’s a great time in our lives, and it’s all about that over the next couple of weeks. And I’ll come back at the Players refreshed and a married man and start a new chapter.”
The pair are due to tie the knot in Cong, a traditional Irish village famous for being the set of the John Wayne movie “The Quiet Man.”
The five-star Ashford Castle last year was voted the No. 1 resort in Great Britain and Ireland by Travel and Leisure voters in the World’s Best Awards, and came in at No. 2 in Ireland for TripAdvisor readers.
McIlroy and Stoll are big fans of the secluded space and spent the last two New Year’s Eves there.
James Bond star Pierce Brosnan married his second wife, Keely Shaye Smith, at the castle in 2001. He also filmed an episode of “Remington Steele” there in the 1980s.
John Lennon, Brad Pitt and Princess Grace are also among the stars who have stayed there. John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara called it home while they filmed “The Quiet Man” in the early 1950s.
McIlroy, 27, met Stoll while he was dating tennis star Caroline Wozniacki in 2012.
The 29-year-old New Yorker was working for the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and is credited for saving him from Ryder Cup disqualification that year when he was running late.
She managed to get him a police escort to the course and they became friends, dating shortly after his split with Wozniacki.
His relationship with Wozniacki lasted from 2011 to 2014 before McIlroy broke it off after the wedding invites had been sent and just before the start of that year’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
