The Trump administration has extended President Obama’s landmark nuclear deal with Iran while the State Department said the executive branch would review the pact.
The White House notified Congress on Tuesday that Iran is complying with the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal and says the US has extended the sanctions relief in return for the country curbing their weapons program.
The certification of Iran’s compliance must be sent to Congress every 90 days.
It was the first time that the Trump administration had certified the deal.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, however, said the administration has undertaken a full review of the agreement.
“Iran remains a leading state sponsor of terror, through many platforms and methods,” Tillerson said in a statement.
As a candidate, Trump blasted the Iran nuclear deal as “deeply flawed” and said it displayed “the highest level of incompetence.”
“My number one priority is to dismantle the disastrous deal with Iran,” Trump said in a speech to an Israeli lobbying group in March 2016.
