The Clinton campaign casting about for somebody to stand in for Donald Trump during debate preparations considered using the sex-scandal-scarred Anthony Weiner, a new book revealed.
Campaign communications director Jennifer Palmieri thought Weiner, an ex-congressman who was married to Hillary Clinton confidant Huma Abedin, would be a perfect fit, but wiser heads prevailed, according to “Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Doomed Campaign.”
The debate was on Sept. 26, but five days earlier reports surfaced showing that Weiner had been sexting with a 15-year-old North Carolina girl.
Eventually, Philippe Reines, a longtime Clinton aide was selected to play the part of The Donald, the book said.
Instead of helping Clinton attain her presidential goal, Weiner may have actually helped undo it because the computer he used to communicate with the teen was seized by the feds.
Then in October, FBI Director James Comey said some of Clinton’s emails were found on the device and announced that the agency would review them to see if any of them contained classified material, giving new life to the investigation into her private server just weeks before the election.
