President Trump will not try to block fired FBI Director James Comey from testifying before Congress on Thursday about Russia meddling in the election, the White House said Monday.
“The president’s power to exert executive privilege is very well established. However, in order to facilitate a swift examination of the facts sought by the intelligence committee, President Trump will not assert executive privilege regarding James Comey’s scheduled testimony,” spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.
Trump fired Comey on May 9, telling Russian officials later that axing the FBI chief took pressure off him.
Trump reportedly asked Comey to drop an FBI investigation into ex-national security director Mike Flynn, and also sought a pledge of loyalty from the former top G-man.
