A 29-year-old man died Friday after he turned Central Park into his late-night automobile speedway, police sources said.
The man — whose identity has not been released — zoomed south on West Drive in a Nissan Altima at about 11:15 p.m., said cops.
He lost control of his car as he tried to make a turn around 60th Street, where the West Drive veers to the east.
The car jumped a curb, zipped along some grass, and slammed into a tree head-on.
Rescuers took the man to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was declared dead. No one else was in the car at the time of the crash, police said.
Normally, the West Drive is only open to high-occupancy vehicles between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on weekdays. When cars are allowed in the park, the speed limit is 20 mph.
