Microsoft is ready to lay off thousands of employees
Microsoft is expected to announce a major reorganization Wednesday — moves that may include pink slips for thousands of employees.
The software giant will reorganize its global sales group as it retunes its business to focus on selling its Azure cloud-computing services and away from boxed software sales, according to reports.
The exact number of layoffs is unclear, though they will hit staff in offices around the world, one person with knowledge of the situation told Reuters.
Microsoft had more than 121,000 employees as of March 31 — up 6 percent from June 30, 2016, according to the company.
This is not the first time that Microsoft has restructured its operation — moves made necessary by the rapidly changing nature of technology.
Microsoft is moving fast to build out its web-based, on-demand computing business to compete with Jeff Bezos’ Amazon.com, a cloud-infrastructure pioneer.
Azure has grown into a top competitor to Amazon Web Services — although it is still just 25 percent Amazon’s size, Reuters reported, citing estimates from Deutsche Bank.
