The NYPD sergeants’ union released a scathing video Monday targeting Bronx DA Darcel Clark for her role in prosecuting the officer who shot dead a bat-wielding woman.
In the 3-minute clip, the Sergeants Benevolent Association slams Clark’s decision to charge Sgt. Hugh Barry with the murder of Deborah Danner, calling it the top prosecutor’s “latest betrayal of trust.”
The video claims that Barry “followed NYPD protocol to a T” in October 2016 when he shot and killed Danner, who threatened cops with scissors before grabbing a baseball bat.
“District Attorney Darcel Clark has an agenda, and it has nothing to do with any semblance of jurisprudence,” the video said.
“Accountability is supposed to begin and end at the top, but in The Bronx, it is determined only by which way the political winds are blowing. When will the madness end?”
The video is the fourth that the union has released in protest of the murder rap against Barry.
The three previous videos targeted Police Commissioner James O’Neill for saying, “We failed” shortly after Danner’s death.
Clark’s office declined to comment Monday.
In the video, the union also noted that for years, neighbors complained about Danner, who was a schizophrenic. But it said she “was passed through the tragically flawed mental-health system whose budget was cut by the mayoral administration of Bill de Blasio and his partner-in-political-pandering City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.”
A spokesperson for the mayor responded, “It’s a lie. Through an award-winner program that’s become a national model, this mayor has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in mental-health services.”
A rep for Mark-Viverito added, “From creating 70,000 summer jobs for young people, to investing in our seniors and providing veterans with needed property tax relief, this budget includes unprecedented investments to support vulnerable New Yorkers across the five boroughs and reflects the priorities of the entire City Council.”
