Maybe they thought Chicken of the Sea was really chicken.
Tri-state area Whole Foods supermarkets recalled their deli-sold chicken salad over the weekend, because it’s actually tuna salad — accidentally mislabeled by the maker, feds and company officials said.
Willow Tree Poultry Farm in Attleboro, Massachusetts, sent out 440 pounds of tuna that was mistakenly called “buffalo style chicken salad,” the USDA announced.
The food went out on Wednesday and hit Whole Foods delis in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut on Friday and Saturday, according to the USDA and Willow Tree.
While the food itself was perfectly OK to eat — as much as tuna salad can be — officials feared customers with seafood allergies might accidentally ingest it.
“It was just a human error and we’re going to make sure this doesn’t happen again.” Willow Tree president Walter Cekala told The Post on Monday.
“We take food safety very seriously. Someone on our team is over there right now trying to find out how this happened — what link in the chain broke.”
