Christie really doesn’t care what you think about him on the beach
An unrepentant Gov. Chris Christie doubled down on his choice to lounge on a public beach during the government shutdown over the weekend — and said he plans to return for more fun in the sun on Tuesday.
“I don’t apologize for it. I don’t back away from it,” the defiant governor said during a press conference late Monday shortly after announcing he signed off on a $34.7 billion budget to end the shutdown.
“Whenever I get done tonight, I’ll go back to the beach. That’s where my family is and that’s where I’ll go back to.”
Christie was caught enjoying the hot summer day Sunday at Island Beach State Park, where he has a residence, with his friends and family — as the crippling shutdown scuttled holiday plans for the rest of New Jersey’s residents.
But Christie said he had no regrets.
“I think I’ve proven over the last eight years, if I have a choice to make between my family and political optics, then I’m going to pick my family,” he said. “Let’s be really clear — that’s our residence. And we have a right to be there whenever we want to be there.”
Later on Sunday, Christie insisted to reporters that he didn’t “get any sun” while basking on the Berkeley Township beach — curious comments he reinforced Monday night.
“I don’t count going out on the beach after I’d been working all morning to sit and talk with my wife and our guests for 40 minutes before I had to leave and come back to work as ‘getting sun,’” Christie said.
“That wasn’t what I was out there to get.”
He again slammed NJ.com and the Star-Ledger newspaper for running front-page photos of him and his family enjoying their beach day.
“They investigated and found out that a politician was where he said he was going to be, with who he said he was going to be with,” Christie said. “Now, if they flew that plane over the beach and I was sitting next to a 25-year-old blonde in that beach chair next to me, that’s a story.
“I wasn’t sitting next to a 25-year-old blonde. I was sitting next to my wife of 31 years surrounded by my children and some of their best friends. If that’s a scandal, then that’s a scandal I’m guilty of every day of my life.”
