Democratic Mayoral hopeful Sal Albanese said his wife’s car was stolen on Saturday afternoon — just as he was on a campaign stop talking to cops about low crime numbers.
Albanese was at a family day at the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, chatting with an NYPD commander, when a thief took off with his wife’s 2007 Honda Fit, which he was using for the day.
“I thought it was kind of strange, really ironic that I just finished talking about crime and I was a victim of crime,” Albanese told the Post. “Statistics don’t matter when you’re personally involved.”
His jacket, as well as two baby seats for his grandchildren, were also inside the car, he said.
He said he called 311 and determined that the car had not been towed.
Albanese said he repeatedly called the 114th Precinct — at the recommendation of a community affairs officer he spoke with at the family day — and no one answered.
“Great customer service!” he said in a sarcastic tweet.
He said he did not call 911 because the incident was “obviously not an emergency.”
Police said they did not have any information on the theft.
“I’ve had a car in the city for 50 years and never had a car stolen,” Albanese said. Albanese, who plans to challenge de Blasio in the mayoral race, this week called the current mayor “the biggest asshole to occupy City Hall.”
