Jerk accused of using cane to beat elderly man pleads not guilty

The deranged teen who bludgeoned a 91-year-old stranger with a cane on an Inwood sidewalk was arraigned Monday in Manhattan court.

Saul Nunez, 19, pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault and one count of attempted assault for the bizarre June 2 attack.

Nunez allegedly walked up to the elderly man, who was pushing a shopping cart, and without warning, kicked away his cart and whacked him over the head with a cane, according to prosecutors.

Surveillance video of the disturbing assault shows a bystander bravely block Nunez from delivering additional blows, officials said.

The defendant fled the scene, but a person who recognized him from the news reported him to police, authorities said.

The victim suffered a gash to his ear that required stitches. Nunez’s arraignment was adjourned on his last court date after a psychiatric exam found him unfit to proceed.
