President Trump on Monday accused James Comey of leaking classified information to the media — on the heels of an explosive new report that reveals memos the former FBI chief kept on their conversations contained secret info.
“James Comey leaked CLASSIFIED INFORMATION to the media. That is so illegal!” Trump tweeted Monday morning.
The FBI has determined the seven memos Comey kept about their discussions are government documents — and has labeled four of them to indicate that they contain “secret” or “confidential” intel, The Hill reported Sunday night, citing anonymous sources.
The info came out after the documents were shown to Congress in recent days, the site reports.
The report does not actually say, as Trump did, that Comey leaked that classified information — rather that Congress is investigating whether he violated FBI rules by creating, storing or sharing his memos, which detail the pair’s conversations on the investigation into possible collusion between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia.
Comey admitted in testimony before a Senate committee in June that he had a friend leak one of the memos, which said Trump had asked him to drop the probe into former national security adviser Mike Flynn’s ties to Russia.
He said at the time that he didn’t believe the memo was a government document.
“I understood this to be my recollection recorded of my conversation with the president. As a private citizen, I thought it important to get it out,” Comey told the committee.
