Chris Christie just can’t stay out of the spotlight these days.
The widely unpopular New Jersey governor showed cat-like reflexes while sitting in the third row at Citi Field Tuesday night, when he extended his left arm to snag a foul ball one-handed in the third inning of the Mets game against the Cardinals.
As has been the case for Christie in recent weeks, he got the prize but not the reaction he wanted. The crowd at Citi Field booed the Republican as he high-fived a fan with the ball in hand. Based on the video replay, Christie, 54, walked a few rows up after the catch and appeared to hand the ball to another fan.
Christie, whose approval rating has fallen to 15 percent in the final six months of his term, drew sharp criticism from New Jersey residents following the July 4 weekend when he was spotted lounging on a beach closed to others during a government shutdown in the state.
The avid sports fan welcomed more controversy last week during his audition on WFAN for a position in sports radio once his political career dries up. Sitting in iconic host Mike Francesa’s seat, Christie got into a war of words with a caller, who criticized him for taking his “fat ass” on a beach vacation while his constituents couldn’t.
Christie stooped to the caller’s level while on air, calling him a “bum” and grouping him in with the “communists in Montclair.”
