Sen. Ron Johnson on Thursday walked back his comment that Sen. John McCain’s brain cancer may have led him to vote against repealing ObamaCare, saying the Arizona Republican is “absolutely” on his game.
“Listen, I was just expressing sympathy for his condition, Johnson (R-Wisc.) said on CNN’s “New Day.” ” Again, I’ve got the greatest respect for John McCain. He’s not impaired in any way, shape or form.”
In a radio interview on Tuesday, Johnson was talking about the failed vote in the Senate last month that would have repealed parts of ObamaCare when he said McCain “has a brain tumor right now. The vote occurred at 1:30 in the morning. Some of that might have factored in.”
McCain was one of three Republican senators who voted against the bill, sending it to a 51-49 defeat in the GOP-controlled Senate.
McCain returned to the Senate just days after being diagnosed with brain cancer to cast the crucial vote.
