T-Mobile offers free Netflix with some family plans
Some T-Mobile subscribers will soon be able to watch as much Netflix as they want — for free.
Under a new promo announced Wednesday, subscribers to the “T-Mobile One” unlimited data family plans who have at least two lines will be eligible to receive a free standard Netflix membership.
The “T-Mobile One” plan costs $40 per line for a family of four, including taxes and fees. Subscribers with two lines pay $60 per line, while those with three pay $47 per line. Netflix subscriptions currently cost $9.99 a month.
The deal will go live on Sept. 12, and customers will be able to activate their new Netflix accounts online or in-store. Those with existing Netflix accounts can contact T-Mobile and will see promotion kick in within one or two billing cycles.
The promotion sets T-Mobile up to better challenge AT&T, which offers subscribers to its unlimited data plan free access to HBO’s streaming service.
The standard Netflix account allows for HD streaming and simultaneous viewing on up to two devices. T-Mobile customers who want one of Netflix’s more expensive plans that allow for 4K streaming or more simultaneous viewers will simply see the price difference added onto their phone bill.
However, though the “T-Mobile One” plan offers unlimited data for each line, video streaming is throttled to 480p quality. So if you plan on watching Netflix on-the-go, prepare for sub-par image quality.
