If the Red Sox are guilty of using technology to steal signs, it appears they want you to think the Yankees are guilty of being paranoid.
A day after news broke that the Yankees complained to Major League Baseball alleging the Red Sox used electronics to steal their signs — which Boston copped to — a Boston outlet is reporting the Yankees launched a separate complaint because they were concerned about a device pitcher Doug Fister was using last week. That device turned out to be his mouthguard.
According to CSN New England, the Yankees went to MLB because they wanted to investigate what the Boston pitcher had adorned around his ear during his start Friday at Yankee Stadium during a 4-1 Red Sox win.
Fister, in a seven-inning, one-run outing, was spotted on YES Network with his mouthpiece — not any sort of audio device — wrapped around his ear.
The Yankees earlier lodged a successful complaint that the Red Sox used an Apple Watch to coordinate communications after stealing Yankees signs during a series at Fenway Park last month. Baseball investigated, and the Red Sox admitted wrongdoing — and also alleged the Yankees used YES Network cameras to cheat, which the team vehemently denied.
