Instagram accidentally advertises on Facebook with ‘rape’ threat post
This algorithm has no chill.
Instagram picked up a vile “rape” threat a reporter posted — and used it to advertise their app on Facebook, the Guardian reported Thursday.
The concerning incident comes one week after Facebook, which owns Instagram, came under intense criticism when it was revealed its ad platform can target anti-semetic categories.
The Guardian reporter, Olivia Solon, said the app used a shocking email she received last year — and posted it on her sister’s Facebook page as a promotion.
“Olivia, you fu–ing bitch!!!!!!!” the email read. “I will rape you before I kill you, you filthy whore.”
The shocking image popped up bearing the message “See Olivia Solon’s photo and posts from friends on Instagram,” according to The Guardian.
Olivia Solon reacted to the distasteful faux pas with a bit of amusement.
“Instagram is using one of my most “engaging” posts to advertise its service to others on Facebook,” she tweeted along with a screenshot and a “laughing” emoji.
The algorithms generate automated messages based on complex computer code.
Facebook said they were addressing the problem.
