Twitter went “covfefe” after President Trump referenced the non-existent country of Nambia during a speech to African leaders.
“In Guinea and Nigeria, you fought a horrifying Ebola outbreak. Nambia’s health system is increasingly self-sufficient,” Trump said at the luncheon, the second time he mispronounced the country’s name.
The White House later clarified that the president was talking about Namibia, a country of 2.5 million people in southwest Africa.
While Nambia isn’t an African nation, it did become a trending topic on Twitter.
Many Twitter users, like Andrew Stroehlein, linked Trump’s creating a new African country with an earlier gaffe.
“Nambia is the world’s top exporter of covfefe ,” he posted on Twitter.
” You guys shouldn’t make fun of Nambia ,” wrote YS . ” Without Nambia, we would not have any covfeve. ”
Trump coined “covefe” in a late night tweet he posted in May while describing “the constant negative press covefe.”
Others connected Trump’s blunder to the character comedian Eddie Murphy played in the movie “Coming to America.”
” Footage of the Prince of #Nambia leaving the @UN after meeting with @realDonaldTrump.,” Joshua Warren said in a post, linking to Murphy as an African prince stopping a taxi at the airport.
