President Trump finally had a good word for the media on Friday — praising the White House press corp for giving birth to “such beautiful children.”
“I cannot believe the media produced such beautiful children,” he said to laughter. “How the media did this, I don’t know.”
The president met some of the costumed kids — including a unicorn, Batgirl, a couple of witches and a trio of Star Wars characters — in the Oval Office just after 3:30 p.m.
The president noticed “Darth Vader” right off the bat.
“Wow, that’s a scary outfit,” he said. “Wow.”
Trump encouraged the kids to come around the Resolute desk for a photo and needled the gathered media.
“Do you know who they are? They are the friendly media,” he said, pointing at the press pool.
He comforted one young girl, who was clearly a bit nervous and crying.
And he maintained a playful banter with the kids and the media.
“These are beautiful, wonderful children,” he said, turning to the kids.
“Are you going to grow up and be like your parents? Mmm, don’t answer that. It can only get me in trouble. You have wonderful parents, right?”
Trump then asked the kids, “So how does the press treat you?”
“You get treated better by the press than anybody in the world, right?” he said, again eliciting laughter.
“Well, congratulations, folks. You did a good job,” he said to the reporters.
